Today I counted 5 new shoots which are all clearly larger than all the existing culms on the bamboo that's getting lots of sun from an east facing window. I think they respond well to the increasing intensity and duration of sunlight.

I checked several of the outside early shooters yesterday. Nothing. :(

Inside it is another story. :)

If you did find shoots, wouldn't you be worried about the 24F tonight and 22F tomorrow? :albino:

Message to Tennessee bamboo. Stay down or die. It's way way way too early!

Of course! But looking back through my records the first shoots should be occurring within the next two weeks.

Everything is early this year in Portland not just bamboo. Bulbs, grasses, trees...

Shooting:

Fargesia Robusta
Fargesia 'Scabria' (in a pot)
Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Spectabilis' (spotted first shoots last weekend Feb. 27!)

I'm worried about cold weather coming, so I've been mulching like crazy on the Spectabilis.

Borinda papyrifera shooting here, too. Very thin shoots, but then I just planted it last fall from a 5-gal container.

Just got home from a 2-day staff retreat

Found shoots on F. dracocephala 'Rufa', F scabrida, Ind longiaritus, Ind solidus, Ind tesselatus, Ind victorialis. Mowed down the Pleioblastus ground covers and it looked like I was tramping on new branches & perhaps, shoots as well. Probably some others as well I did not check too thoroughly.
